Before Our Contractors Come to Your House

It can be hard not to try and remedy the situation yourself. That said, we recommend leaving the work up to the professionals. However, there are some ways to clean before the restoration professionals arrive. You need to work quickly to save everything in your home from water damage. First, make sure your home is safe to enter. Turn off all electronics and breakers around your house to avoid electrocution. It may sound overly careful, but dampened appliances can be harmful when exposed to water.

First Things First

A serious home flood can leave everything damaged. As soon as your house is safe to enter, remove all your possessions. Paper and inked items like newspapers need a level, dry surface. This also includes little tabletop items, such as lamps and collectibles. Once you've removed handheld items, books and other dampened materials, you can begin cleaning. To begin the drying process, try using air movers or air conditioning in your house to channel air around the area. Soak up water from wooden furniture or flat surfaces. Though you may want to try, don't use a normal home vacuum cleaner to clean water. Incorrect use of these tools can be harmful to you and harm the vacuum. When you're ready to move furniture, prop up furniture such as heavy chairs using wooden or cement blocks to elevate them above the wet areas. Water adds weight to surfaces, carpets, and fabrics. All that extra weight makes rugs, leather goods and fur difficult to lift. If you need to remove a rug, lift carefully. Hang clothing, draperies and other fabrics away from the soaked area to dry correctly. Pieces such as wet fabrics may not be saved easily. In serious flooding situations, the extra water weight can affect the foundation of your house. Because of this, do not go near drooping ceilings or bent floors. These areas have likely taken on the most water and could fall under weight.
